Behind The Scenes: Our Journey to ISO 9001 Certification
Why ISO 9001 Mattered to Us
As Motrac Research Engineering Ltd continued to grow, we reached a point where strengthening our quality assurance framework wasn’t just a strategic decision — it was essential to how we wanted to operate. Working across emissions measurement, atmospheric chemistry and highly regulated sectors, we’ve always placed accuracy, traceability and reliability at the centre of our work.
ISO 9001 felt like the natural next step: a way to formalise what we were already doing well, open doors to new markets, and give our clients even greater confidence in our processes.
But with a small team and no dedicated quality manager, we knew the journey would require focus, discipline and a pragmatic approach.
“We knew ISO 9001 accreditation would be critical in enabling future growth and unlocking new opportunities.” — Laura Russell, Business Operations Manager
Where We Started
Motrac has always operated at the intersection of academic research and applied engineering. Our work spans technical consultancy, field‑based testing, proof‑of‑concept development and the design of bespoke emissions monitoring systems.
As our projects often support compliance, validation and performance assurance, we were already working to high internal standards — but not within a formalised Quality Management System.
The challenge was clear:
build a structured, scalable QMS
maintain day‑to‑day delivery
and achieve certification within an ambitious timeframe
We didn’t want unnecessary bureaucracy. We wanted a system that reflected how we actually work.
Choosing SGS and Preparing for Audit
We selected SGS for their technical expertise and practical, business‑focused approach.
From the outset, we committed to building our QMS around existing good practice rather than reinventing everything from scratch. This meant tightening documentation, clarifying processes and ensuring our governance aligned with ISO expectations.
Early preparation made a huge difference. By the time SGS arrived for Stage 1, our systems were in place and we were ready for constructive scrutiny.
The auditors’ communication was clear, transparent and collaborative — something we genuinely appreciated. Their Stage 1 findings helped us prioritise improvements quickly and move into Stage 2 with confidence.
Achieving Certification — and What It Changed
We achieved ISO 9001 certification in around two months — meeting our internal targets and unlocking immediate commercial benefits.
For us, the biggest impact wasn’t the certificate itself, but the clarity and resilience the process brought to our operations. ISO 9001 helped us:
Strengthen document control
Improve process consistency
Formalise risk management
Build a scalable framework for future growth
One outcome we’re particularly proud of: We achieved certification with no areas for improvement raised, demonstrating the maturity and robustness of our systems.
The SGS team recognised our strengths while ensuring full conformity with ISO requirements. Their balanced, business‑aware approach kept momentum high throughout the process.
Looking Ahead
ISO 9001 is now embedded in our key operations, supporting both our technical delivery and our long‑term growth plans.
A recent milestone — joining the UKRI Sci‑Tech cluster at Daresbury STFC Laboratories — reflects the direction we’re heading: deeper collaboration, continued innovation and a commitment to raising standards across our field.
Continual improvement remains central to how we work. ISO 9001 hasn’t changed our culture — it has strengthened it.
“Our only regret is not pursuing ISO 9001 certification sooner.” — Steve Hammond, Company Director
